Ep. 21 - What To Do When You Are Bored - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 9623 роки тому
The beauty of living on a sailboat is that you can never really be bored! You are surrounded by nature, frequently changing countries and travelling and always able to work on the boat if all else fails. This week we explore the French Caribbean Island of St Martin from Marigot Bay to Grand Case and Ile Pinel! FEATURED MUSIC 03:36 - Music by Jim Yosef & Side-B - On Our Way (Kedmiri Remix) [feat...
Ep. 22 - Saba: The Best Caribbean Islands To Visit - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 3,4 тис.5 років тому
Saba is not the kind of place where you find all-inclusive resorts or really any resorts at all, and it would definitely not qualify for the most visited islands in the Caribbean. BUT it is the best island that either of us has ever been to and let us tell you why. Not only the scuba diving, stay tuned for next weeks video on diving in Saba, but the incredible hiking, amazing food, interesting ...
Ep. 20 - Off To The French Caribbean Islands - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 2,4 тис.5 років тому
We leave the world of BVI Charter Boats behind and set sail for St Martin, one of the French Caribbean Islands that includes Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy and French Guiana. The island of St Martin is one of the most visited Caribbean islands for cruisers because of the duty free imports available for any boat parts needed. That also made for cheap provisioning so we immediately bega...
Ep. 19 - Exploring THE BATHS & Testing Our ROCNA ANCHOR - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 3,2 тис.5 років тому
We continue to explore the British Virgin Islands on a sailboat starting with The Baths. The Baths are a geological marvel on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands and are located in a National Park south of Spanish Town. The large granite boulders covering the island and extending miles underground are stunning and the little hiking trails wound between them makes it worth the visit. A sh...
Ep. 18 - CARIBBEAN ISLAND HOPPING in the BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 2,5 тис.5 років тому
We spend this week exploring all the beautiful islands and best places of the British Virgin Islands. It is like a vacation after all the difficult sailing and breakdowns since we left the North Atlantic months earlier. No wonder it is one of the most visited Caribbean countries for chartering sailboats to explore - I can see why all these visitors want to charter a sailboat in the British Virg...
Ep. 17 - SAILING to the BVI's & HOW WE SHOWER ONBOARD - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 8 тис.5 років тому
We take you on our longest offshore passage yet sailing from the Dominican Republic, across the infamous Mona Passage to Puerto Rico. But we cannot stop in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands as we do not have the required visas so we keep going until we get to the British Virgin Islands. Ep. 15 - BOAT REPAIRS in Exotic Places - How Not To Sail A Boat
Переглядів 1,7 тис.5 років тому
The budget and the repairs are getting us a bit down as we continue beating East into the trade winds and it takes a toll on our old sailboat. We arrive to the Dominican Republic in Luperon wanting to explore but the list of things that has gone wrong on the three day sail from the Bahamas is extensive (and defeating) so instead we get to work. We do get to see a little bit of the countryside w...
Ep. 14 - SAILING to the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - How Not To Sail A Boat

We sail out of Georgetown in the Bahamas to depart for the Dominican Republic. But what we hoped to do in one attempt the week before took us a total of three attempts due to the constant 'Easting' that is dreaded by cruisers - battling East through the Caribbean Sea against the trade winds. We had sailing breakdowns, endured rough weather and seas and had the worst possible winds for our trip ...

Hey there! Cally here, I have now done that leg solo in my new boat (5'3" draft) on the ICW. Touched bottom once just before the bridge before Charleston southbound but it was soft mud and I got off easily. I highly recommend Bob424 Long Tracks for any ICW travel (Google it, can overlay on your charts) and your mast height should be fine there but I was still religious about checking each and every bridge just in case! Hope that helps!

@@mikejmardis oh no I just mean I cannot remember anything happening with the engine in this video. As of Charleston we were already overstating our US visas and were being actively monitored by US Customs and Border Patrol to leave as soon as the north winds stopped so that was not an option. And to be honest I didn't realize how much it mattered and that that was not an acceptable fix, that meant ir wasn't a huge priority in the months that followed either! Wish I had your comments back then :)

That is the worst idea ever. You end up doing more damage to your motor before you replace the gaske

Lucky for us it was a short term solution as with our American visas running out and the weather meaning we had to go intracoastal, we had to motor without a choice! Staying put to fix it was not an option according to border patrol, and I do not mess with American immigration! Though I appreciate the comment as it has crossed my mind recently if this is a recommended solution or only a last minute jury rig in a pinch kind of solution! Thanks for the comment!
